Morning or Afternoon - Guided tour of the Monastery of Alcobaça.

The Monastery or Royal Abbey of Santa Maria, founded by the Cistercian Order in 1153. Its construction began in 1178 on land donated by Dom Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, to the Cistercian Order, in fulfillment of a promise made after the Christian reconquest of Santarém.

Jewel of primitive Gothic in Portugal, the Royal Abbey of Santa Maria includes the magnificent Gothic tombs of the two lovers D. Pedro I and Inês de Castro, who played the most beautiful and tragic love story during the Middle Ages in Portugal.
