Tourism and Sustainability

The tourist activity is constantly growing and has aroused interest from several parts, whether caused by the growing wave of tourists or the realization that, economically, it is important to publicize and promote the region.

First of all, it is important to realize that destinations are the basis of tourism, it is on this basis that activities are developed which consequently reflect the best and worst in the region, destinations and their activities are representative of each other.

Sustainability in tourism is an issue that has quickly gone from a distant hypothesis or even a niche to something that will inevitably have to happen to all companies linked, not only to this sector, but to all others, it has become a matter of quality. and competitiveness.

“Sustainable tourism must make adequate use of environmental resources, respect the socio-cultural authenticity of communities and ensure that economic activities are viable in the long term. It also requires the informed participation of stakeholders, constant monitoring of its impacts, maintaining a high level of tourist satisfaction (adapted from the concept of Sustainable Tourism of the World Tourism Organization – UNWTO, 2005).” – Tourism of Portugal.

The pandemic that we are overcoming has put greater pressure on companies to do their part in the most diverse areas linked to their activity, in this case tourism, but given that this covers several layers, we are talking about combining actions that allow us to act in social contexts. , cultural, environmental and economic.

A good first step is the promotion and support of companies that seek to implement strategies that integrate social and environmental responsibility activities, strategies that educate and qualify the communities that are closest to them, and that aim to be an added value for the society, making it more united.
